Today we celebrate the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. However, social media is filled with a water-down version of what the civil rights movement was about. Perhaps America is ashamed of itself, and — especially in today’s political climate where a racist and misogynist will soon become the President of the United States! — would rather promote peaceful protests that only tell a portion of the civil rights story.
Whitewashing doesn’t make the wrong go away.
I dare you to take a look at one of the negative aspects of the movement: Bloody Sunday, where people were brutally attacked for protesting against racism. Representative John Lewis was among the hundreds who faced beatings and other forms of beratement, while marching for equality. What was supposed to have been a peaceful march in Selma, Alabama turned into something much worse…

This MLK Day, please give the movement the respect it deserves by seeing it for what it was, be it good, bad or ugly. Society has failed in this area, and we are now repeating racist horror stories through Tamir Rice, Sandra Bland, Charlotte’s own Keith Lamont Scott and countless others who have died because of the color of their skin.
